The Nordplus program, established by the Nordic Council of Ministers in 1988/1989 initially only for the Nordic countries, since 2008 has included the Baltic States. The aims of the program are to improve and implement innovations in the education systems of the Nordic and Baltic countries. The activities of the Nordplus program are based on an agreement between the educational institutions and organizations of participating countries. The program supports projects promoting knowledge acquisition, exchange as well as networking.
Since 2008 Riga First Medical College of the University of Latvia has been participating in an international project for the Nordic, Baltic and Northern Autonomous Communities coordinated by the Nordic Midwives Education Association. The project subject is midwives’ education. Nordejordemodern is the mission of the Midwife of the Nord project which is aimed to educate skilled and professional midwives and to promote the use of new information technologies. In total, there are 14 partners in the project. All the Nordic and Baltic countries are involved in the project because it is important to ensure that midwives develop proper competences to work in an international context.
